Our Heritage day last Saturday 14th September was quite successful with a number of people coming into the church to enjoy and discuss the history of this magnificent building. Tea, Cakes and coffee were plentiful and so much information available from the Mothers Union, Royal British Legion, Guiseley War Graves, the history of the Bells and the Bell Ringers and a chance to brush up on your Fair Trade and Recycling from our Green Team.  Here are a number of photos taken on the day and each one has a story to tell,

EDITH APPLEYARD – 60 Years Long Service Award

(A Contribution to our Web Page by Margaret Whitaker)

Just a few of the memories from my formative years, making a lasting impression. God Bless you Mum.

From an early age I remember mum (Edith) taking part in competition and Parades and fundraising events for Remembrance Sunday, selling thousands of poppies with love and enthusiasm, raising awareness and substantial amounts of money for Widows and Children of Ex-Servicemen.

Mum continued her service in the Royal British Legion -Women’s Section for over 60 years travelling to Conferences in London, Blackpool, Southport, in fact as a Child it seemed to be all over the country, using various modes of transport – Bus, Train and even sometimes on foot.

Mum was the Standard Bearer for the Guiseley Branch of the RBL – WS and I often look fondly at the flag hung in church, as this is representative of so much of our lives together. We travelled together to Parades and Garden Fete’s for Mum to take part in competition work. The Train was my favourite mode of transport – to me at 7 years of age was a very exciting experience.

Mum worked tirelessly for the Women’s Section and was the recipient of many awards for her ‘Drill and Parade work’ (I can see her now marching around our Living Room) and her awards were displayed in the Meeting Rooms with pride. Her Long Service medals are still today on display and can be viewed at the Abbey House Museum in Kirkstall.

I would like to thank Elsie Turner for allowing me access to these photographs and wonderful memories of Mum. Just looking through these has evoked so many memories in both Myself and John.

Mum and Elsie became very close friends over the years, both with a similar vision of the importance of the Royal British Legion – Women’s Section and whilst many of these ladies are no longer with us, they remain in our hearts and minds.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
